Triathlon at Jekyll Island---Kelley is an age-group winner!

This past weekend,  Kelley and her hubby and children were at Jekyll Island
for a triathlon.  Her son, Tristan won an award for his run.
Kelley with her son, Tristan and daughter, Arden.

The start of the triathlon:

Kelley is watching the wave ahead of her take off.
Look at the wave --the water was very choppy and was difficult
for many of the swimmers.  Some swimmers needed assistance and
one 44 year-old male had to be resuscitated and he died later at a local hospital.

There goes our Kelley!  She is a very good strong swimmer.

Here she is at the finish line and hadn't realized she received second place in the very competitive age group of 36-40!  She even missed the turn-around in the run and had run extra and still placed so high out of a very large field of women!
There is also a lot of activities there on the Island including a release of sea turtles.  Congratulations Kelley--We are proud of you!!!!

ON ON TRI presents "the Attorney Chase 5K"!!!!!!!

If you live in the Hilton Head Island,SC area and you are looking for
a 5K race on the beach around Mother's Day,  this is the race for you!
This is the third year for this race and third year I have done it.
Quite frankly, this is one of my favorite 5K races.  I will let my
pictures do the talking!
ON ON TRI presents the race this year and we are sooooooooo
happy to have "Al" back full-time at Hilton Head.  Go to his new
location or visit him on line.

Al is holding his daughter and here is his newest daughter!
At the turn-around, if you want,  say a very "judicial" saying and you might win a $25 gift certificate!

Here are some of the "Attorneys to chase".  If you catch one, you may be eligible
for quite a nice gift bag.  I caught one today and let me tell you it was worth the chase!
See the woman in the lime green shirt?  This was her first race!  She was first in the 60-64 age group.  She ran and beat her 3 daughters here.  They all came to Hilton Head to be with their Mom on Mother's day and run the race together.
See these folks!  They ran the race last year and are all good friends
and certainly had a great time at the "Attorney Chase 5K".
Here is Al making the famous starting line in the sand.  I asked for a head start,so
he jokingly made a little line ahead of the official line for me!
Here  is a volunteer and Al's wife with their baby.
The race tee shirt

Remember this name when you are out for that long swim/bike or run.
You know the drill---You just go---ON&ON!!!!!!!!!
Here I am with my award.  I am sure you wonder why you keep seeing me wearing all my "Ironman"  stuff from Hawaii.  Well, after training for over one year and then spending 6 weeks in Hawaii training,  I figured I have the right
to wear my clothes from that event even if I am----lastwaveelaine!!!!

White Lake,NC Half Ironman Triathlon 2012

It seems like yesterday when I did the White Lake in 2011 as part of my lottery
requirement for the Hawaii Ironman 2011.  I have not had the drive to train as much since last October.  Here are the details of my recent triathlon experience.
PACKING!!!!!!!
It is amazing the amount of "stuff" I pack for---"just in case"!!!!!!This took up all the room in our twin guest room at home!
OUR MOTEL ROOM---not fancy but it was OK.

The boardwalk from our motel to the beach.

Most of the rentals where we stayed are right on White Lake.  The beach is a beautiful white sand beach.  The water is clear blue and it is a delightful place.
SHERPA WILL
Sherpa Will I is happy that this is the last triathlon for awhile!
CHECKING WATER TEMP
The water temp was at 78 degrees--it was wet suit legal, but I prefer not using a wet suit.  I just wore the tri bottoms and tri bra.
FRIENDS
Here I am with Susan.  I met her last year.  She is a retired Marine Lieutenant  Colonel.  She is a very good, strong triathlete.
SWIM START---12 waves!--I was in wave 9(not the last wave for once!)

The water felt a little cool but I quickly warmed up!

Mary and Russ--a couple we met at the race.

Mary at swim start and in my wave.   This was her first Half Ironman.

That is me with the "goofy" nose plugs at the final countdown till swim start.

TODAY WAS ALSO THE KENTUCKY DERBY!!
WE ARE OFF!!!!!!

Done with the Swim
TO T 1!!!!!
I had cramps in my left calf on 3 occasions during the swim. I just stop swimming and apply pressure to the leg cramp and it usually goes away.  Also, I take deep breaths and relax as tensing up will make the cramps worse.  My right shoulder held out pretty well during the swim.  I was right at about 1 hour for the 1.2 mile swim.  That is NOT my best time by any means but with the bum shoulder and calf cramps, well it was OK for "old" lastwaveelaine!

Mary exiting the swim.  The swim is her least favorite part of the triathlon.

She has a big smile of relief that the swim is over!
BIKE TIME
Mary leaving T1--Sherpa Will didn't get any of me at bike transition.
It was starting to get hot now and got well over 90 degrees.  The wind wasn't bad.
As usual,  I was at the way back of the pack on the bike with only about 3 or 4 people behind me.  The heat didn't bother me too much on the bike.  I had
MY CAMEL PACK
I put 4 small bottles of frozen water in this pack and other items--even an old lipstick as "hey we girls still like to keep some makeup on'!!!!
I finished the bike in around 4 hours for 56 miles--not my best but I felt pretty good.
T2 and off to RUN!!!!
The aid stations had everything you needed--ice water, flat cola, fruit, salty snacks,
cold towels and cheerful volunteers.

Here is Mary on the run.  Actually, most of us jogged slowly or walked as it was very hot and no shade.  I developed severe upper thigh cramps and wrapped the cold towel around my leg and applied pressure.  Then, I just slowly walked the cramp away.  The sky now was starting to get dark somewhat like last year.

At 10 miles into the run, one of the race officials said they were going to stop the race as a line of thunderstorms was heading towards White lake.  I got into the sag wagon along with the other slower runners left on the course.  Most of us had only 1 to 3 more miles to go.  I didn't mind as I don't want to be out during a severe storm.  The bulk of the contestants did finish before the race had to be stopped.  I told Sherpa Will that I think this will be my last long triathlon.
My joints just ache way too much during training and the actual race.  I think I will stick to Sprint or International distance.  By the way,  on Sunday there was a Sprint triathlon at White Lake and an 87 year-old female finished it!  I have
been in some triathlons with her--now she is just amazing!
Her are Mary and I getting our gear.  She finished before the race was stopped.

Here is Russ--he did his first ever triathlon--the Sprint on Sunday.
He also finished.

This is a great location for triathlons.  I would advise any of you to
TRI one of the distances at White Lake.
The race director is very supportive.  It is well-organized.  The bike and run course are flat.  The aid stations are stocked well.
